Chapter
Part of the The New Middle Ages book series (TNMA)

Abstract

This chapter examines the “hagiographic landscape” of medieval Ravenna, including the churches and cults dedicated to its saints as well as the wide range of writing produced to encourage their veneration. Following the history of texts about Saint Apollinaris, Ravenna’s first bishop and the city’s patron saint, the chapter investigates the flourishing of new hagiographic literature in the tenth century and the complex intentions behind its production.
