Abstract

This chapter traces the legend of Saint Barbatianus from the end of Late Antiquity in the sixth century to the popularization of cult in the tenth century. In particular, it examines the contexts of tenth-century Ravenna that supported the dramatic growth of hagiographic production in that period, and specifically the role of the archbishops of Ravenna, the Ottonian emperors, and the city’s nobles and monastic institutions they supported.
