Decline and Fall I

  • Eric Caines

At the time of the 1959 general election, the Conservative Party dominated the political scene to such an extent that doubts were being openly expressed as to whether the Labour Party would ever come to power again. By the time of the 1964 election, this position had been almost entirely reversed and Labour came into office, albeit with a paper-thin majority in Parliament. Chapter 2 explores the causes of this precipitous decline and fall in the fortunes of the Conservative Party over that five-year period and analyses the challenge for the Party as it went into opposition.
