Abstract

Language instruction in China has a long and varied history. In this chapter we briefly describe this history and identify the drivers of change, past and present. We show how national, regional and local policies have influenced learning and teaching practice, and how these have interacted with international movements and pressures. We particularly look at individual teachers and how they navigate these external pressures and their role in implementing and initiating change. From this background we then briefly introduce the following chapters and contextualise them within this historical framework.
