Abstract

The introduction deals with laying out the framework of the book with a particular reference to two questions: First, do the actors of the political Islamic movements become more moderate as they became part of a legitimate political system, as moderation theory suggests? Or, do we need to revise this assumption by seeing moderation as a temporary political expedient used by these parties, who slowly begin imposing their more radical agendas after they come to power? Second, does the emergence of the new Islamic middle class help produce a greater degree of democracy, as modernization theory predicts?
