Feminism and Gender Policies in Post-Dictatorship Chile (1990–2010)

Abstract

This chapter explores the Chilean feminist movement’s evolution in the post-dictatorship period. After having laid out some conceptual definitions, the chapter provides a brief overview of second-wave feminism in the struggle to overthrow Pinochet’s dictatorship. It then builds on the analysis of the divisions which surfaced within the movement as the transition to democracy was being negotiated to analyze the current highly fragmented feminist landscape. The chapter especially draws attention to a third and often overlooked category of feminist organizations, alongside the well-established institutional and autonomous feminists: social mobilization organizations. The state’s gender public policies are then examined. Lastly, the chapter focuses on two major feminist claims: domestic violence and sexual and reproductive rights, to illustrate their divergent trajectories at the interface of feminist activism and gender public policy.
