Abstract
Pakistan-Iran relations during the pre-Iranian Islamic Revolution days were extremely close marked by the convergence of their strategic interests and cooperation in various fields. Ironically, the advent of the Iranian Islamic Revolution in 1979 had a negative impact on Pakistan-Iran relations due to a variety of factors, the most important being their differences in dealing with Afghanistan in the 1990s and Iran’s growing enmity with the USA. The post-2014 Afghanistan and the conclusion of the deal on the Iranian nuclear program offer the two countries an opportunity to rebuild their vitally important relationship. Besides strengthening Pakistan-Iran cooperation in various fields, they should coordinate their Afghanistan policies. It remains to be seen, however, whether they will be able to rise to the challenge.
