Abstract
The relationship between higher education and the federal government was solidified during Second World War. Legislation supported the institution’s war research endeavors, the economy, and education through one of the greatest pieces of federal legislation, the Serviceman’s Readjustment Act (1944), which opened the doors of higher education for thousands of deserving young men and women. The resulting influx of students gained federal attention and support, leading to a profound paradigm shift after the war. At the war’s end, with the help of higher education, the US was the arbiter of power, propelling the US into a proven position of superiority. The US dominated the global marketplace with a robust domestic economy, unmatched technological capabilities, and exhibited the ideal democratic nation-state that educates its citizens.
