Affecting the Apparatus: Queer Feminist Re/Decodings in the Digital Dramaturgy Lab, Toronto

Abstract

In this chapter, Antje Budde describes the principles of process-based, collaborative, and politically provocative works/actions of the nomadic networking platform Digital Dramaturgy Lab (DDL). An open-source apparatus/network that brings together a diverse group of interdisciplinary and politically minded artists, scholars, and activists across ages, ethnicities, abilities, cultures, and sexualities, the DDL, Toronto is a laboratory of the social imagination, building environments that challenge the neoliberal university and municipal arts bureaucracies while imagining—in the doing—a refunctioned apparatus/network that allows for respect, togetherness, solidarity, pleasure, and open-ended processes of learning and sharing not generated for profit or individualist gain. Budde discusses Brechtian, Dadaist, feminist, queer, and anti-colonial strategies of resistance in DDL’s projects Artaud’s Cage and Jing@Ju Karaoke—Interactive Queering of Beijing Opera.
