Abstract

This chapter describes the social environment in Southern Europe in yet greater detail through an analysis of the main lifestyle stereotypes. Individuals refer to three major possible lifestyles: the alternative “hippie” type, the fashionable “yuppie” type, or the uncouth/uneducated “redneck” type. These are called, respectively, Pestoni, Chiattilli, and Cafoni in Naples; Perroflautas, Pijos, and Chonis/Cani in Barcelona; and Apliti, Yiappides, and Kagoures in Athens. This chapter introduces the properties of these stereotypes and the way they discursively connect to different political, social, and stylistic themes. Those belonging to the alternative lifestyle stereotype are found to be discursively associated to the alter-globalization movement. These distrust and dislike individuals seen to partake of the other two lifestyle stereotypes, which are seen as lacking in political autonomy.
