Abstract
The Epilogue follows the main players of the Second Republic through the Second Empire and into the Third Republic. The Conclusion shows that the system of parliamentary politics as well as that of republican social democracy suffered severe setbacks because of the events of the Second Republic; by 1852 it seemed that these systems had been irrevocably vanquished. Nevertheless, the principle of authority embodied in Napoleon III was a hostage to fortune that would ultimately defeat him.
