Abstract
This chapter focuses on several case studies that represent a range of historical, political, economic, and social contexts found in East and Southeast Asia and it highlights some of the significant exogenous and endogenous conditions that help shape these countries’ responses to globalization. Research studies indicate that global economic pressures have resulted in the governments utilizing the discourse of globalization to serve nationalistic economic goals and to define an exclusive national identity. The review of literature also shows how the state plays a central role in the inclusion and framing of particular discourses of global citizenship in school curricula.
