Conclusion: Predicting a New Scandal Environment in the Twenty-First Century

Abstract

This chapter represents a review of key themes from the book, points to new directions for scandal research, and predicts what the scandal environment might look like in the decades to come, especially as new technologies, apps, and devices become integrated into our lives and the mainstream. The authors argue that while public fascination with scandal is no different than it was in millennia past, modern technology has increased the stakes for broadening the public audience of scandal. Ultimately, the authors argue that the private–public line has not only shifted but—in all likelihood—has ceased to exist.
