Abstract

This chapter, addresses why the study of Chicana/o autobiography is important for the twenty-first century. By ending the book with Reyna Grande’s The Distance between Us: A Memoir, readers will understand the way automitografias help to illuminate the past, the way cultures move from one place to another, and the creation of a new space of representation that questions the effects of invisibility in our everyday lives and future.

The multiple associations created around self-representation, postnationalism, transnation, and trans-Americanity, and its interconnections with communal expression and identity, allow for new cultural expressions where Chicana/o automitografia becomes a source for empowerment in the new century.
