Abstract
Yeandle finishes her discussion of Angela Carter’s engagement with Western philosophy by identifying some of the key themes that characterise Carter’s mostly antagonistic response to Western thought, such as a rejection of absolutes and universals, a disruption of binary divisions and a demythologisation of established norms. This section shows the progression and timeline of Carter’s philosophical research, pinpointing which thinkers or philosophical ideas were pertinent to her at particular times, or whether—as is the case for some philosophers—they had an enduring influence on her writing. As well as challenging particular philosophical arguments and theories, she deconstructs the androcentricity of Western philosophy, and adds a female perspective to this male-dominated discipline: she simultaneously philosophises and dephilosophises.
