Advances in Network Accessibility and Reconstruction after Major Earthquakes

Abstract

Road accessibility to the population is very significant for rescue teams and the routing of supplies after major earthquakes. This chapter surveys basic and complex problems concerning accessibility to the population and methods to solve them. Here, “accessibility to the population” is used to indicate if paths exist from origins to destinations. In addition, a number of trends and opportunities related to this topic are discussed, together with key issues of data treatment to obtain solutions just-in-time after major disasters. In summary, the chapter makes the link between theoretical Operations Research (OR)/Management Science (MS) problems and methods, and the real problems on the ground related to accessibility issues, studied in a collaborative project with members of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters.
