Abstract

Kang examines women’s political rights in Niger from independence in 1960 to 2015. First, she focuses on women’s presence in the national legislature before and after the adoption of a gender quota law and finds that the quota was instrumental in improving women’s descriptive representation. Second, Kang examines attitudes toward female and male leaders, using polls conducted by Afrobarometer in 2013 and 2015. Last, the chapter assesses women’s and men’s political engagement, also drawing on data from Afrobarometer. Specifically, she examines whether women are less likely to contact parliamentarians than are men.
