The Road Ahead: The Future of Global Leadership and Implications for Research and Practice

Successful Global Leadership

Abstract

While there has been progress in our understanding of global leadership, there is more to learn, and Henson recommends a number of areas that will help both scholars and practitioners gain a better understanding of successful global leadership in the next decade: (1) future success factors for various global leadership roles; (2) the impact of the continued growth of emerging markets on the practice of global leadership; (3) the implications of new technologies and innovations for how a new generation of managers will lead globally; (4) future developmental paths and experiences for global leaders; (5) the relationships among national cultures, corporate cultures, and institutional forces; and (6) increasing use of joint ventures, strategic alliances, partnerships, networks, and other forms of cross-border collaboration and cooperation within and across organizations.

Cultural variations do not matter in all types of cross-national transactions. They matter in some situations more than others: they matter more in situations where fundamental cultural values are either challenged or questioned in the process of expanding global operations of multinational firms.
