Introduction: Luther the Reformer, Past and Present

Abstract

A brief overview of Luther’s life and his Reformation insights as well as the events of Oct. 31, 1517 and their significance. This is followed by a brief overview of how Luther has been and continues to be interpreted, the vast array of different “Luthers” debated among scholars. Hints are offered concerning the practical implications of my finding that the Reformer employs a variety of different concepts and images on most doctrines but in a patterned way. It will also be noted how appreciating Luther’s unsystematic, pastoral approach to theology is crucial for understanding how and why the Reformation happened.
