Abstract

In the year 1933, more than 200 Spanish college students, including future intellectuals like Isabel García Lorca, Julián Marías, and Guillermo Díaz-Plaja, enrolled in a government-sponsored cruise throughout the Mediterranean with the goal of re-discovering “the roots of Western civilization.” Their vivid encounter with diverse cultures and countries arose conflicting interpretations about the significance of the Mediterranean for the development of Europe, and pushed the young scholars to reevaluate their ideas on colonialism and the role of politics and religion in the area, and ultimately lead them to reflect on whether and how the experience of otherness was compatible with a feeling of belonging and unity.
