Abstract

Yıldırım Şentürk, on the basis of his observations and research, tries to picture being individuals in a megacity entangled with many urban problems. He explores the peculiarities of the problems of the megacity and underlines the management strategies implemented in these. According to him, the urban problems in the megacity are due to multi-actors and multi-causes and are, therefore, becoming more complex and difficult to comprehend. He argues that the neoliberal urban policy-oriented city authorities, as well as entrepreneurs, have turned these peculiarities of the urban problems to their advantage for legitimating neoliberal urban policies. Şentürk points out how alternative urban movements and actors need to adopt new political strategies against this urban neoliberalism in order to receive more support from the inhabitants of the city.

I would like to thank Emel Şentürk, Gülçin Erdi, Çare Olgun Çalışkan, and Carolyn Gifford for their comments, supports, or editing on previous versions of the chapter.
