Abstract
Because this study is focused on analyzing the social conditions of the rise to fame of Lady Gaga, a brief overview of the singer’s life and career is useful to explore as a necessary background for the remainder of the book. Lady Gaga was born and raised in New York City as Stefani Germanotta. This chapter describes the period from her early rise in the New York club scene to the time when she achieved her first success in the world of popular music. Separate attention is paid to Lady Gaga’s own perceptions and notions of fame and how they are reflected in her work.
