Abstract
Through discussions of values, the meaning of education, national and personal identity and their own hopes and frustrations, young people interviewed reveal a complex and contradictory relationship to the national project. Their optimism, patriotism, commitment to the ideals social justice and high cultural and intellectual level is set against a palpable sense of atrophy and unfulfilled potential, as they face the harsh day-to-day reality of work that fails to pay a living wage, the near impossibility of moving on from the family home and the moral choices that context forces them to make. We see a generation struggling to reimagine their own futures and that of their nation—a generation that will, however, be charged with that task if the Revolution is to be maintained.
