Abstract

Driven by political upheavals in the Arab world, media (based) in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have had to innovate approaches to accommodate their audiences. Early signs suggest that both Egyptian and Emirati media have taken cues from the upheavals of the Arab Spring, such that the initial flimsy form of media accountability has been reoriented toward a new kind of transparency. As such, this study aims to draw parallels between the older Arab sphere (Egypt) and newer Arab world (UAE) in order to explore generating new scientific knowledge. Twelve journalists and media professionals from both countries were qualitatively interviewed between November 2011 and May 2012 on this topic, either in person or via phone or Skype. This study distinguishes two media systems within the Arab sphere, as well as considers international comparative studies on media systems within the heterogeneous Arab world.
