Abstract
This chapter summarises the findings from the Brown and Levinson (Politeness: Some universals in language usage, Cambridge University Press, 1987) and Leech (The pragmatics of politeness, Oxford University Press, 2014) analyses and suggests possible reasons for these. The results show specific problematic areas in terms of cyberpragmatics which highlights the challenges that telecollaboration poses for students and emphasises their need for structured and detailed task scaffolding. Limitations and possibilities for further research are discussed, as well as implications for teachers.
