Abstract
This chapter lays out the structure of the book and introduces the main themes of the book, i.e., the relevance of interdisciplinary studies, not treating young people as a homogeneous block, wide definitions of political participation, precise language and concepts, listening to young people’s voices, avoiding stereotypes, labels and generalisations, the usefulness of the term DIO politics (Do-It-Ourselves political participation) for many forms of non-electoral political participation, the responsibility of politics and political institutions in young people’s political (dis) engagement and the value of such a holistic study of young people’s political participation. It tracks the main developments in youth policy and politicians’ attitudes to young people’s political participation in Britain in the twenty-first century with particular reference to the 2017 ‘youthquake’ and increasing youth-led protests.
