Abstract
This chapter opens with a brief chronology of immigration from Eastern Europe to the United States. Several major waves of immigrants who arrived after the late 1880s are discussed. The overview includes the discussion of characteristics of early immigrants, such as their numbers, settlement patterns, demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultural values. The major focus of the chapter is on contemporary immigrants from Eastern Europe who arrived to the United States after the fall of the former Soviet Union. Using the data from the US Department of Homeland Security, the chapter discusses the age structure, marital status, settlement patterns, and class of admission of this understudied immigrant population.
