Neoliberal Think Tank Networks in Latin America and Europe: Strategic Replication and Cross-National Organizing

Think Tanks and Global Politics

Abstract

Transnational think tank politics and networking represent a new frontier in critical think tank research. ThisĀ  chapter compares and contrasts neoliberal think tank networks in Europe and Latin America. The authors track and trace their historical evolution and the different contextual parameters in each region, classify the think tanks involved and present new empirical evidence on structural data (such as board and staff interlocks). The comparison presents evidence for similar logics of membership/constituencies in the networks. While founding and networking as such can be considered an example of strategic replication necessary to advance discourses in the global, regional, and national knowledge power regimes, cross-national organizing enables the transnational diffusion and translation of neoliberal ideas, concepts, and social technologies in policy making.
