Abstract
The conclusion summarizes the different chapters and specifically highlights the relevance of closeness in studies on migration. Closeness is facilitated and created not only on a symbolic level or through monetary remittances, but also on the basis of material gift exchange. Closeness, in the sense of resemblance, immediacy, intimacy, and proximity has to take material dimensions into account. Finally th conclusion proposes that place continues to constitute an important aspect in the creation and shaping of communities as well as in socio-cultural practices that (re)create transnational social spaces.
