Abstract

In this chapter changes in global production and global markets, economic growth and unemployment, and their impact on SMEs, are analysed. The importance of the informal economy, composed of SMEs, in numerous countries, and their direct and indirect role in economic growth, are outlined. The formal economy is seen to be interconnected with the informal economy and cannot grow without its cooperation. It is argued that the role of high-growth SMEs in the formal economy is central in the SMEs globalisation process and could and perhaps should be extended.
