Queering the State of Exception, 1973–1990

Abstract

This chapter argues that the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet was able to portray itself as economically exceptional, thanks to its interruption of democracy, paradoxically couched in the perpetuation of conservative societal conventions like the heterosexual family. It then figured families as the ideal protagonists of its neoliberal reforms. However, this manipulation of teleologies made for a simplistically forward-looking vision of time, and other loopholes in the dictatorship’s discourse. The performance art of Carlos Leppe (1974–1981), Carlos Flores’ 1984 documentary El Charles Bronson chileno, and Alberto Fuguet’s novel La azarosa y sobreexpuesta vida de Enrique Alekán (1990) thus all use queer forms of masculinity to contest the heterosexual, reproductive, masculine teleologies within which Pinochet’s state of exception was imposed.
