The Monstrous Masculinities of Chile’s Agrarian Reform, 1965–1970

Abstract

This chapter opens in 1965, when Chile’s economy became a model for Alliance for Progress agrarian reform and modernization directives in Latin America, and its cultural production became more cosmopolitan and outward looking. The recognition abroad of José Donoso’s novels El lugar sin límites (1966) and El obsceno pájaro de la noche (1970), and Miguel Littin’s film El chacal de Nahueltoro (1969) provided the cultural counterpart to Chile’s newly prominent place in world economic affairs. Their work also represented characters whose “monstrous” (though cosmopolitan) performances of masculinity queered ideas about normative reproductive practices. This chapter critiques ideas about modernization to draw parallels between these literary and cinematic models of queerness and the rise of Chile as a new hemispheric model of economic good practices.
