Abstract

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is in transition, experiencing unprecedented sectarian, ethnic, and geopolitical turbulence since the formation of the region following the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire a century ago. This chapter outlines the complexities of the disputes, rivalries, aspirational goals, and processes of change and development, as well as major power competition that have come to feature in the region and influence its future direction. It essentially introduces the issues and trends that are unpacked and analyzed in the remaining chapters of the book.
