Part of the book series: Palgrave's Frontiers in Criminology Theory ((FCRT))

Abstract

In this chapter we lay the foundation for this book by describing the pervasiveness of alcohol and drug use, and the intersections between substance use and criminal behavior in the United States today. The research documenting the relationship between alcohol, drug use, and criminal behavior is robust, and substance use is common among those involved with the criminal justice system. To provide a broad overview of these relationships, we will first distinguish drug and alcohol abuse, dependence, disorders, and addiction. Second, we will set the stage for a discussion of drugs and crime by describing the prevalence of alcohol, drug use, and drug-related arrest among adolescents and adults in the U.S. Theories of the drug–crime nexus will be introduced, and examples will be illustrated using case studies when possible.
