Abstract

Bangladesh counterterrorism policy tackles a range of transnational security threats, including terrorism, arms and drug smuggling, human trafficking, and transnational organized crime (Chowdhury 2010). Kala contends that the reasons for terrorism include poverty, the rise of religious extremism, the need for ethnic identity, an unregulated and unequal education system, the influence of neighboring states, corruption, political rivalry and growing intolerance, a population boom, and unemployment. The Government of Bangladesh has implemented an Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009. The Amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Act approved the death penalty as the sanction for financing of terrorist activities. The amendment also prohibits the use of Bangladeshi land for the conduct of terrorist activities inside the country or against other countries. The future trend suggests that religious extremist activities in Bangladesh are likely to be clandestine, intermittent, and violent to draw attention of a wider audience. Hence, the Bangladesh security forces need to implement counterterrorism efforts consistently.
