Abstract

We analyse the current model of Indian development assistance, which contrasts with traditional foreign aid. India uses the South–South cooperation framework as a guiding principle to link business, trade and economic interests with developing countries. It leverages lines of credits to enhance its energy security and geostrategic interests with Africa and its neighbours. The Modi government has enhanced development cooperation to push for business as development and framing development as growth. India’s development cooperation has similarities with that of other BRICS countries and it supports the BRICS financial institutions. The chapter examines India’s emergence as a development partner from an aid receiver and giver of technical assistance to a development and business partner.
