Abstract

In this chapter Traies summarises the key themes developed in The Lives of Older Lesbians. She concludes that, while older lesbians are a very diverse group, they nonetheless recognise a common identity, which is based on their shared experience of social stigma. Traies also shows that her research demonstrates significant differences between the lived experiences of older lesbians and older gay men. She argues for further research with significantly under-represented groups of older lesbians—the most socially isolated, those living with disability, and black and minority ethnic women. She discusses the methodological implications of such a research agender and concludes by suggesting that the LGBT community itself also needs to listen to the stories of older lesbians.
