Abstract
The focus of this chapter is how Promoviendo (promoting) became a term to describe how the author thinks about his research and approach to queer studies in education. He begins with a testimonio describing his trajectory of how he came “to do” queer of color research in education. He then discusses his collaboration with the Promotoras of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles who teach a workshop series that engages Latina/o parents in queer topics that ignite a sense of activism for pro-queer rights issues. Through an analysis of their pedagogical and discursive practices, the author argues that the Promotoras advocacy work provides an important model for how to promote and build grassroots support for queer Latina/o youth that is anti-oppressive and compassionate in its approach to teaching and advocacy.
