Abstract

Given that the subject of women is a hotly contested area of Tolkien Studies, this chapter explores Tolkien’s portrayal of gender in light of relevant criticism. In highlighting the presuppositions of negative criticism, Coutras addresses objections regarding gender bias, male friendship, and the female intellect. She also addresses Tolkien’s understanding of masculinity and femininity in Middle-earth, female passivity and idealization, and sexuality and marriage. She concludes by expounding upon Tolkien’s portrayal of gender in an ideal and “unfallen” society.
