Abstract

In this chapter, Coutras addresses the implications of Túrin’s suicide in the context of Tolkien’s theological aesthetics. Tolkien’s extensive treatment of Túrin’s tragedy coincides with his exploration into the nature of death. Within the framework of God’s glory, Tolkien does not leave Túrin in desolation and defeat. He acknowledges the reality of pagan despair but discerns resonances of transcendental beauty. Coutras explores the theological implications of Túrin’s suicide within the context of Tolkien’s legendarium, addressing the areas of justice, mercy, divine providence, and Túrin’s eternal destiny.
