Abstract

In this chapter, Coutras explores Tolkien’s treatment of good and evil in relation to heroism and splendor. Through steadfast courage, the light of being reaches its fullness, breaking through the darkness and revealing eternal beauty. In Tolkien’s Middle-earth, his heroes have a remarkable sense of purpose, undergirded by a strength of will. Balthasar identifies this unyielding sense of purpose and resolve as the catalyst for the revelation of splendor. Coutras argues that the transcendental splendor of being is the central force of goodness that combats the horror of evil, as seen in Éowyn’s confrontation with the Witch-king.
