Abstract

If the central topic, as Bel claims himself, of his work is subjectivity, then several different types of subjects can be distinguished. As the chapter “Subjects of Discourse” shows, Bel considers dancers and choreographers to be effects of a specific discourse on dance that he authors; they are subjects of the discourse ‘Jérôme Bel.’ Referring to Bel’s very first piece, Nom donné par l’auteur, and the piece Xavier Le Roy, this chapter looks into Bel’s idea of writing (“Writing Degree Zero”), notions of authorship (Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes) and the conceptual heritage (Jospeh Kosuth, Robert Smithson) his notion of dance as a proposition on dance is entangled with. Trying to bridge the gap between the materiality of the bodies on stage and the signification processes they enter, the spectator produces what Roland Barthes has called theatricality.
