Abstract
The Introduction situates the study of women and gender in the broader academic discipline of Russian and Soviet studies as it developed through the twentieth century and it notes the growth in the field since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. In recent decades, scholarship has been facilitated by greater access to primary research materials in Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union and there is now scope for much more extensive collaboration between scholars across the former East–West divide.
