Abstract

In light of the main theme of ‘Ābdı̄n historians, that is, to glorify Egyptian monarchy, it is no wonder that nationalist aspects are not found in the representations of the Mamluks in the historical works of the ‘Ābdı̄n historians. Nevertheless ‘Ābdı̄n historian Gaston Wiet does offer a sympathetic portrayal of the Mamluks, but it is not very characteristic of Egyptian nationalism. Importantly, the other ‘Ābdı̄n historians did not touch upon the Mamluk Sultanate. Regarding the Mamluk Beys under Ottoman rule, the ‘Ābdı̄n historians hold a negative view on them.
