Abstract
Camilo Gomides’s chapter, “Homoaffectivity Exemplified in Dom Casmurro,” offers an in-depth queer-inflected analysis of the novel’s plot, particularly the ambiguous relationship between Bento and Escobar. Gomides explores the homoeroticism and homosocial bonds that go beyond the jealousy of a husband who believes himself cuckolded. According to Gomides, Capitu, the enigmatic wife of Bento, the protagonist and narrator, accused of betraying him with his best friend Escobar, can also be thought of as the conduit for Bento’s relationship with Escobar. In the homosocial bond between the two, Capitu becomes an object of exchange for the performance of masculinity central to heteronormative relationships between men at the turn of the twentieth century.
