Abstract

Scottish press coverage of the suffrage question during 1906 seemed to vindicate the tactics of the WSPU. The press was more likely to report the demonstrations, arrests and imprisonments of the suffragettes than it had been to report the ‘at homes’ of constitutional societies. These reports were placed on both general news and women’s pages, indicating a new interest in the subject among male readers. In addition, the arrival of notorious suffragettes from England led to detailed reports of their meetings, allowing arguments in favour of women’s suffrage to be published in both conservative and liberal newspapers.
