Abstract

The election of a Liberal government in 1905 gave fresh hope to the suffrage campaign. The establishment of the WSPU also brought the issue to prominence in many newspapers as new “tactics” were adopted to raise the profile of the cause. Correspondence to Scottish newspapers was particularly stimulated by suffragette action within Scotland and there was also coverage of the constitutional campaign for the right to vote for women graduates of Scottish universities. The suffragettes were able to use coverage of their militant actions to get their arguments into the newspapers, although the speeches of male politicians were often privileged over the voices of women – voices that were increasingly described as screeching and shrieking as the suffragettes invaded the political public sphere.
