The Beach Beneath the Street: Art and Counterpublics
“Countering Neoliberal Publics: Screen and Space” explores how various artistic practices can cultivate and represent modes of being public and being in public that contest neoliberal practices and policies. These chapters highlight how communities can not only articulate sites of diversity and/or resistance, but change how and where public debates are structured. This section begins with a consideration of how publicly-funded Australian Indigenous filmmaking has created critical templates of resistance and is followed by an examination of how SBS Independent’s broader complicity with state neoliberal agendas has not precluded the possibility of making films that generate alternate practices for public memory work. The remaining chapters interrogate how public spaces can be repurposed and reinhabited in ways that throw into relief not only the assumptions governing these spaces, but the possibilities inherent in them for rethinking how we occupy and interact with space and with each other.
