Abstract
Over 25 years after the fall of socialism, the memory of this period in European history continues to oscillate between nostalgia and opprobrium. For textbooks, as educational media and carriers of cultures of memory, this state of disagreement amounts to both a challenge and an opportunity to reflect societal debates around the issue. In their overview of current work on the depiction of socialism in textbooks, the authors uncover the theoretical assumptions and methodological approaches underlying this research and point the reader towards innovative work which ventures beyond simple analysis of textbooks’ shortcomings in this regard. This chapter reveals a preponderance of research on Germany and post-Soviet countries and casts light on the heterogeneity of the theoretical premises and findings of work in this area.
