Abstract
This chapter continues the discussion of disabled actors introduced at the end of the previous chapter but goes deeper into the views expressed by this group as reported in academic- and industry-based research as well as in media interviews. A number of common themes emerge when we consider the views and experiences of disabled actors – their experiences of implicit and explicit discrimination in hiring and audition practices, their issues with accessibility, their fears regarding disclosure, their wish for accommodations and their move towards activism. All of these stem from a desire to move away from long-held media stereotypes and be cast in so-called ‘regular’ roles.
